 Night Flower
Since August 22, 2011, at 9:30PM, I am disguised…Mum died.
I appear strong to my family, I thanked people who gave me their sincere condolences. “Not now, maybe later” is what I’ve said, to the many well-meaning offers of support. I have nodded my head appropriately in conversations, completed household routines, consoled my children and clung to my husband.
I am a dependable, responsible and strong daughter, a calm sister and a quiet mother. I keep my disguise intact.
Disguised this week, making the phone calls, finalizing information and writing Mommy’s obituary, (because my siblings think, I write better than them). Trying to capture a woman, “the Mommy”, who I was connected to from conception to the end of her life; the container of my childhood, my maiden years, parts of my mid-life, the starter of my creativity, the strength of my stubborn will, the fierceness of my independence, the sweetness of my caring and the sour of my temper.
But in the dark soul of every night since August 22, the disguise comes off… like some insidious poison, grief drips into my heart, gently at first, waking me from my tenuous sleep, as if someone is calling me sweetly from sleep. This grief pummels me awake, until I’m finally sitting with my knees to my face. A sharp sliver of anguish piercing my chest. I cry hard and long, with bouts of inconsolable anger, ill-formed regrets and wracked with confusion, I pick up the phone, and call my mother’s home. After several rings, her message comes on, “This is Gloria, I’m not home right now, would you please leave your name and number and I’ll get back to you. Thank you and have a good day.” I leave a message, “Mommy, I need you, call me back, I miss you.” I realize, just how corrosive grief is, at night. Like some dark, insidious poison, it drips into my heart so gently, it goes unnoticed during the day. In the morning, the disguise comes back.
I will work every day, because routines and rituals help keep me sane and thriving. I put pencil to paper, paint to canvas, my hands are in the habit and my mind pushes for it. My heart is broken.
I am more determined now, than ever to continue a artful legacy, my Mum gave it to me…a love of creating. It is the one thing, in this ending that I can begin anew…my art. It is the thing that goes on with or without a disguise. Thank you, Mommy.
It is morning, I wish peace to you and yours.
P.S. My mother loved flowers, birds, all things of nature. I generally do not create flowers, every time I have, it’s been with her in mind.

 Walrus Totem
My intent for this year is to live in abundance, it is what I will be aware of in my life, the abundance that I have in mind, body and spirit.
The word came to me during my quiet time in the morning where I do my sitting in silence prayer, my “Morning Pages” (journaling), then I listen to tribal music, in my nook with a candle burning, living in that special moment. It has become a ritual that gives sanity to a day that may have anything in store for me.
It doesn’t mean that I will not have bad days or days of frustration, but that I will remember, I have abundance of everything, “creativity, love, family, patience, will, friendship, ambition, money, etc.” in those moments and throughout the day.
Peace to you.

 ALA - Ibo Goddess
Last week, she was just a pretty face, with a splash of blue in the background sitting on my easel. Voila, this week, she is making her debut.
ALA, also spelled ALE, ALLA also known as ANE - Earth Mother Goddess of the Ibo tribe in Nigeria. Creator of the living and Queen of the dead. Provider of communal loyalty and Lawgiver of society. Her symbol is the crescent moon. She is still worshiped by the Ibo today, who pay tribute to her each year during the Yam festival.
Ala is a part of my Goddess Series. I think this series may be ongoing for some time, since there are thousands of goddesses from all over the world clamoring for me to paint them! Feminine Energy is rocking the world now and forever!
Ala’s Vital Statistic: 30″ x 22″, mixed media (Graphite, layered with many layers of watercolor paint and finished with acrylic paint).
(Inside info: Ala’s face is based on a beautiful young woman who now lives in South Carolina, and her baby bump was fashioned by a lovely mommy who gave birth to a lovely little girl, in January last year! Thank you ladies!)
Original Price: $800 – Unframed, plus S/H - Limited Edition Prints of (150) Signed and numbered – $75 Unframed plus S/H. All framing would be an additional cost.
I’m in the “nookery” (another word for my art studio). I’m just humming with creativity and joy! I have so much that I’m working on now. I am working on images from my Southwest Landscape Series. I took an extensive trip to New Mexico and took over 700 reference pictures and also did numerous sketches. There is something about Taos, New Mexico, that just does it for me, I was so feeling the vibe of artist, Georgia O’Keefe.
I’m in the “Nookery” (another name for my art studio), humming with creativity and joy! I am also working on some commissioned work, which I’ll post about another time in the future.
Well, it’s Friday, I stop work at 7:00PM, when I will kick back with the family, have a nice glass of Champagne, listen to world music, chat about our day, eat some comfort food and then watch “Legends of the Guardians”. Hmmm…I can’t wait!
May you enjoy what makes you happy and healthy. Peace to you all.

For me, there is a mysteriousness, magical quality to being wrapped in knowledge, creativity and intelligence.
I live In a society, where videos and fashion deems that less is better, I like the idea of being “wrapped“.
Putting politics, religion and power issues aside, I love the beauty of these women, wrapped, I created them as Muses, contemplative, looking to be called, ready to encourage all forms of creativity.
(The original painting “3 Muses” was created and sold in 2008).
Today, wrap yourself in the creativity of your muse. Peace to you all.
